Appearance
The bread comes in the usual Albertsons waxed paper bag. The appearance is very plain. In fact, this bread reminds me of the plastic loaves that came with the Easy-Bake Oven (remember that ?) The overall look is very flat, with three funny-looking scores on top. One side has a split along the whole length of the loaf. The loaf feels fairly dense, which is of course expected for sourdough. The crust feels terrible. It's soft and rubbery, it could easily be made of plastic. The outside smell is faint, and vaguely unpleasant. When making sourdough, you want some sour, but you don't want to cross the line into locker-room sour, if you get my drift. This bread smells like it is toeing that line. The cut was very easy, and making good-looking slices was a breeze. The crumb is quite white and seems of average fluffyness. There is a substantial layer of unbaked dough towards the bottom, it is visible in the photo. The inside smell is distinctly sour, but not the kind of sour I associate with (good) sourdough. This reminds me more of day-old socks. Taste
The crust is of mediocre consistency, and the sour taste feels entirely artificial, it's almost painful. The overall taste is unpleasant, and the aftertaste is terrible. The crumb does not really taste of bread. Its sourness tastes artificial, just like the crust. This is pretty bad. Ingredients
The list of ingredients is not for the faint of heart. In addition to the enriched flour, it contains sixteen additives. Sigh... Conclusion
The only reason I am not giving this bread an F is because (sadly) there is worse. But it's very close. This is the worst sourdough bread I have ever tasted. |
